Ingredients
Meat and Seasonings
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 ½ tsp garlic powder (divided)
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp sea salt
- ½ tsp pepper
- 1 ½ – 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Vegetables and Sauce
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 green bell peppers, diced
- 4 oz mushrooms, diced
- 2 Tbsp tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 Tbsp cornstarch
Cheese and Garnish
- 4 slices provolone, chopped
- 1 – 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella
- Chopped parsley for serving
Optional for Serving
- Cooked rice, cauliflower rice, or baked potatoes
Instructions
- Brown the beef. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat in a large, ovenproof skillet or sauté pan. Add the ground beef and sprinkle with about 1 teaspoon garlic powder. Break the meat into chunks and cook until no longer pink inside. Drain excess fat and set the beef aside.
- Sauté the onions and caramelize tomato paste. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil to the pan and heat. Add the diced onions and sauté for several minutes until slightly translucent. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for a few more minutes to caramelize, enhancing the flavor.
- Cook peppers and mushrooms. Add diced green bell peppers and mushrooms to the onions. Continue to sauté for 6-8 minutes until the vegetables are softened to your preference—either slightly crisp or fully tender.
- Prepare sauce and season. Reduce heat to medium-low. In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth and cornstarch until smooth. Add this mixture to the skillet along with Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, onion powder, and the remaining garlic powder. Stir well to combine and create a flavorful sauce.
- Combine beef and cheese, melt provolone. Return the browned ground beef to the skillet and stir in the chopped provolone cheese. Toss everything together and allow the provolone to melt, thickening the sauce. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a bit more beef broth. Remove from heat when sauce is thickened.
- Broil with mozzarella. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly over the top. Place the skillet under the broiler on high for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and slightly browned. Watch closely to avoid burning.
- Serve. Let the dish cool for about 5 minutes before serving. Spoon the cheesesteak mixture over cooked rice, cauliflower rice, or baked potatoes. Garnish with chopped parsley and optional toppings like banana peppers for an extra kick.
Notes
- Use an oven-safe skillet for easy broiling in the same pan.
- Adjust the amount of Worcestershire sauce to taste for more or less tanginess.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, add cornstarch gradually until desired consistency is reached.
- Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based meat for variations.
- Serve with side salads or steamed vegetables to complete the meal.
