Description

This Sweet and Spicy Cauliflower recipe features crispy roasted cauliflower florets coated in a crunchy bread crumb crust and drenched in a luscious sweet and spicy sauce made from honey, chili garlic sauce, brown sugar, and fresh ginger. A perfect appetizer or side dish with a delightful balance of sweet heat and savory flavor, garnished with fresh green onions.

Ingredients

Cauliflower and Coating

  • 1 head of cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
  • 1/3 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Olive oil spray, for spritzing

Sweet and Spicy Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons chili garlic sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon minced garlic

Garnish

  • 4 green onions, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Rack: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Place a wire rack on a baking sheet and spray it with nonstick spray to prevent sticking and promote crispiness.
  2. Bread the Cauliflower: In a bowl, lightly beat the eggs. In another bowl, combine the seasoned bread crumbs, panko bread crumbs, and flour. Dip each cauliflower floret first into the beaten eggs, then fully coat them in the bread crumb mixture. Place the breaded florets evenly on the prepared wire rack. Once all are coated, spritz the florets with olive oil spray to help them brown during roasting.
  3. Roast the Cauliflower: Roast the breaded cauliflower in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the florets are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  4. Prepare the Sweet and Spicy Sauce: While the cauliflower roasts, combine the honey, chili garlic sauce, brown sugar, soy sauce, grated ginger, and minced garlic in a saucepan. Heat over medium heat, whisking to blend the ingredients. Bring the mixture to a bubble and let it simmer for 1 to 2 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and allow to cool; the sauce will thicken more as it cools.
  5. Serve: Remove the roasted cauliflower from the oven and drizzle generously with the prepared sweet and spicy sauce. Alternatively, serve the sauce on the side as a dip. Sprinkle the dish with thinly sliced green onions for a fresh finish. Serve immediately and enjoy the flavorful crispy cauliflower.

Notes

  • Using a wire rack on a baking sheet helps the cauliflower stay crispy by allowing air circulation around the florets during roasting.
  • Spraying the breaded cauliflower with olive oil before roasting achieves a golden brown crust without deep frying.
  • The sauce can be adjusted in sweetness or spiciness by varying the honey and chili garlic sauce amounts.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the bread crumbs with gluten-free alternatives and ensure soy sauce is gluten-free tamari.
  • Leftover cauliflower with sauce is best eaten fresh; reheating may soften the crispy crust.
