Description

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 to 2 drops red food coloring, optional

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together pineapple juice, ketchup, vinegar, soy sauce, and light brown sugar.
  2. Heat the sauce over medium heat until it comes to a simmer and all of the ingredients are well combined.
  3. In a small bowl, stir together cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Pour the slurry into the simmering sauce, whisking constantly until the sauce thickens.
  4. If desired, add a drop or two of red food coloring to achieve the signature red color of classic sweet and sour sauce.
  5. Remove the sauce from heat and let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of sugar for a sweeter or tangier flavor, depending on your preference.
  • Red food coloring is optional, but it gives the sauce a classic, vibrant appearance.
