Description

A classic Sloppy Joe recipe featuring seasoned ground beef mixed with sautéed onions and green peppers, simmered in a tangy ketchup and mustard sauce, served hot on your favorite buns for a quick and satisfying sandwich.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb 80/20 ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped fine
  • 1 medium green pepper, chopped fine

Sauce and Seasonings

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Sauté Vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoon of canola oil in a large frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the finely chopped onion and green pepper, cooking for about 5 minutes until they start to soften.
  2. Prepare Pan for Cooking Beef: Push the sautéed onions and peppers to the outer edge of the pan and increase the heat to medium-high to prepare for browning the beef.
  3. Brown the Beef: Spread the ground beef evenly in the center of the pan and let it cook undisturbed for 5 minutes until it begins to brown.
  4. Cook Through and Season: Season the beef with salt and black pepper, then flip it over. Break the meat into small pieces with a wooden spoon or spatula while continuing to cook for another 2-3 minutes until no pink remains.
  5. Add Sauce Ingredients: Reduce the heat to medium-low and stir in the ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar. Cook together for 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld thoroughly.
  6. Serve: Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture onto burger buns, brioche buns, or potato rolls and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a leaner option, substitute 90/10 ground beef or ground turkey.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce for a spicy kick.
  • Serve with pickles or coleslaw for extra texture and flavor.
  • Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and can be reheated on the stovetop.
