Description

This Pull Apart Garlic Bread recipe features fluffy, buttery bread bites infused with a rich garlic butter topping. Made from scratch using a soft homemade dough, these pull-apart pieces are rolled, sliced, coated in garlic herb butter, and baked to golden perfection. Perfect for sharing alongside your favorite meal, this garlic bread offers a deliciously aromatic and tender texture that melts in your mouth.

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water, divided
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large cloves garlic, finely grated or minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. Prepare the yeast mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine ½ cup of warm water, active dry yeast, and honey. Stir gently and let it rest for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating that the yeast is activated.
  2. Mix the dough: Add the all-purpose flour, softened unsalted butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the remaining ½ cup warm water, stirring between additions until ingredients come together and form a dough ball. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky; if too sticky, sprinkle in a little more flour as needed.
  3. Knead the dough: Knead the dough by hand or with a stand mixer for 7-10 minutes until smooth, elastic, and slightly springy when pressed with a thumb. Cover the bowl with a dish cloth and let dough rise at room temperature, undisturbed, until doubled in size, about one hour.
  4. Make garlic butter topping: About 15 minutes before the dough finishes rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small saucepan, melt 5 tablespoons of butter on low heat. Once melted, add the minced garlic, chopped fresh parsley, and Italian seasoning. Stir well and continue to warm on low for 2 minutes to infuse the garlic and herbs into the butter, then remove from heat.
  5. Shape the dough: Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it into a long tube approximately 1 inch in diameter. Cut the dough tube into 1-inch pieces, creating small dough balls.
  6. Coat and arrange: Place the dough pieces into the saucepan with the prepared garlic butter and gently toss until each piece is fully coated in the flavorful garlic butter.
  7. Bake: Transfer the garlic butter-coated dough pieces into an 8 x 4 inch loaf pan, arranging them so they touch but are not pressed flat. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Garnish and serve: Optionally, sprinkle additional fresh chopped parsley on top of the baked bread for a vibrant finish. Serve warm and pull apart pieces to enjoy.

Notes

  • Make sure the water used to activate the yeast is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
  • For an extra crispy crust, you can brush some additional melted butter on top before baking.
  • Feel free to swap Italian seasoning for fresh or dried rosemary or thyme for a different herb flavor.
  • If the dough is too sticky to handle after rising, lightly flour your work surface and hands when shaping.
  • This bread is best enjoyed fresh out of the oven but can be reheated wrapped in foil for a few minutes to refresh softness.
