Description

Crispy golden chicken coated in a sweet, sticky honey sesame glaze — this takeout-style favorite is easy to make at home and pairs perfectly with rice or noodles for a comforting Asian-inspired meal.

Ingredients

  • 0.70 lb boneless chicken thigh or breast (about 300g)
  • 1 cup potato or corn starch
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
  • 23 spring onions, sliced
  • 1 egg white
  • Oil for frying
  • Marinade for Chicken:
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Sauce:
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown or white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Cut chicken into bite-sized pieces. In a bowl, combine all marinade ingredients with the chicken and mix well. Let marinate for 15 minutes.
  2. In another small bowl, mix all the sauce ingredients until well combined. Set aside.
  3. Add the egg white to the marinated chicken and mix to coat.
  4. Dredge each chicken piece in potato or corn starch, shaking off any excess.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Deep fry the chicken in batches for 2–3 minutes, or until lightly golden and crispy. Drain and set aside.
  6. In a wok or large pan over medium-high heat, pour in the sauce and bring it to a boil.
  7. Add the fried chicken pieces and stir to coat evenly in the sauce.
  8. Toss in the toasted sesame seeds and spring onions. Stir well.
  9. Garnish with extra sesame seeds and more spring onions before serving.

Notes

  • Serve with steamed jasmine rice or noodles for a complete meal.
  • Double-frying the chicken will make it extra crispy.
  • Adjust the sweetness or acidity of the sauce to taste.
