Description
Air fryer garlic naan is a classic Indian flatbread with a rich buttery garlic flavor that’s soft, fluffy, and perfect as a side dish or appetizer. Using an air fryer cuts down cooking time while maintaining a tender texture and golden finish, making it easy to enjoy this restaurant-style naan at home.
Ingredients
For The Naan Bread
- 1/3 cup warm milk
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
- 3 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons grated garlic
- 3-4 tablespoon water for kneading
For The Garlic Butter
- 2 tablespoons chopped coriander or cilantro leaves
- 3 tablespoons melted butter
- 2 teaspoons finely chopped garlic
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: Whisk warm milk, active dry yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar in a bowl. Cover and allow it to sit for 5 minutes until the mixture is frothy on top, indicating the yeast is active. If not frothy, restart with fresh yeast.
- Combine dry and wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, salt, plain yogurt, vegetable oil, and grated garlic. Add the activated yeast mixture into this bowl.
- Knead the dough: Mix everything together and gradually add 3-4 tablespoons of water as needed. Knead until the dough is soft, smooth, and elastic.
- Let dough rise: Lightly grease the dough with oil, cover it with plastic wrap, and place it in a warm spot for at least 2 hours to rise and double in size.
- Divide and shape dough: Once risen, transfer the dough to a clean surface and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each into a ball and then flatten into rounds about ½ inch thick using a rolling pin.
- Prepare garlic butter: Mix chopped coriander, melted butter, and finely chopped garlic together in a small bowl.
- Brush naan with garlic butter: Generously brush garlic butter over each naan before cooking.
- Preheat air fryer: Set the air fryer to 350°F and lightly oil the basket.
- Air fry the naan: Place one naan at a time into the basket and cook for 7-8 minutes on one side until golden brown. Do not flip to avoid making the naan hard.
- Finish and serve: Immediately brush cooked naan with more garlic butter on removal. Repeat with remaining naans and serve warm.
Notes
- Ensure the milk is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
- If the yeast mixture does not become frothy after 5 minutes, start over with fresh yeast for best results.
- A food processor can be used to make the dough, but avoid overmixing to prevent tough texture.
- Do not roll the naan too thin; thickness preserves softness and prevents crispiness.
- Brushing garlic butter before cooking adds flavor infusion.
- Preheating the air fryer ensures even cooking and a golden finish.
