Description

This hearty Turkey Chili Recipe is a delicious and easy-to-make dish perfect for warming up during chilly days. Made on the stovetop with ground turkey, beans, vegetables, and a blend of flavorful spices, it’s ideal for meal prep and packed with nutrition and taste.

Ingredients

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 1 small white onion, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeded and finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic

Proteins and Canned Goods

  • 1 pound ground turkey (93/7 lean recommended)
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (15 ounce) can white kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 (15 ounce) can corn, drained and rinsed

Spices and Seasonings

  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Liquids

  • 32 ounces broth of your choice (turkey, chicken, beef, or vegetable)
  • A drizzle of oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Heat the Pot: Heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add a drizzle of oil to coat the bottom.
  2. Cook the Turkey: Add the ground turkey to the pot and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, ensuring no pink remains.
  3. Sauté Vegetables: Stir in the chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic. Cook until they become softened and fragrant, about 4-5 minutes.
  4. Add Spices and Canned Ingredients: Mix in the chili powder, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, and salt. Then add the crushed tomatoes, drained kidney beans, white kidney beans, and corn. Stir well to combine everything evenly.
  5. Add Broth and Simmer: Pour in the broth of your choice and bring the mixture to a simmer. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and cook gently for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and encourage flavor melding.
  6. Adjust Seasoning: Taste the chili and adjust salt, pepper, or additional spices as needed to suit your preference. Serve hot.

Notes

  • What kind of ground turkey should I use for chili? 93/7 lean ground turkey provides enough fat to keep the chili flavorful and moist without greasiness.
  • Using 99% lean ground turkey breast can make the chili dry unless additional oil is added.
  • 85/15 ground turkey works too but will be richer and may produce excess fat that should be skimmed off.
