Description

This crispy sesame chicken recipe features juicy, battered chicken pieces fried to golden perfection and tossed in a luscious sweet and savory honey sesame sauce. Enhanced with fragrant garlic, toasted sesame oil, and a delightful crunch from sesame seeds and fresh green onions, this homemade dish surpasses takeout versions and is perfect for a flavorful dinner.

Ingredients

For the Chicken

  • 1 1/2 lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • Oil for frying (about 3 inches deep)

For the Sauce

  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (reduced sodium recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons sliced green onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare Egg Mixture: In a bowl, whisk together the beaten eggs with salt and pepper until well combined.
  2. Prepare Coating: On a shallow plate or bowl, stir together the all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup cornstarch.
  3. Coat Chicken: Dip each chicken piece first into the egg mixture and then coat thoroughly in the flour-cornstarch mixture. Repeat for all chicken pieces to ensure a crispy coating.
  4. Heat Oil: Pour about 3 inches of oil into a deep pan and heat it to 350°F (175°C), preparing for deep frying.
  5. Fry Chicken: Fry 7-8 pieces of chicken at a time in the hot oil. Cook each batch for about 5 minutes or until the pieces turn crispy and golden brown. Transfer to paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat for all chicken.
  6. Make Sauce Mixture: While frying chicken, combine honey, soy sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, rice vinegar, toasted sesame oil, and 2 teaspoons of cornstarch in a bowl, mixing well to ensure no lumps.
  7. Cook Sauce: In a large pan over medium heat, warm 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil. Add minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant. Pour in the sauce mixture and bring to a simmer, cooking for 3-4 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  8. Toss Chicken in Sauce: Add the fried chicken pieces to the sauce pan, tossing well to evenly coat each piece with the honey sesame sauce.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle sesame seeds and sliced green onions over the sauced chicken. Serve immediately for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use reduced sodium soy sauce to control salt levels but maintain the savory depth.
  • Ensure oil temperature remains steady at 350°F for crispy, non-greasy chicken.
  • To make this gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend and check soy sauce for gluten-free labeling.
  • Leftover chicken can be reheated on a skillet to maintain crispiness but may lose some crunch after refrigeration.
  • Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce for a spicy kick.
