Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups confectioners sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened natural cocoa powder
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons heavy whipping cream, plus more as needed to thin
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt


Instructions

  1. Using a handheld mixer or stand mixer with a whisk attachment, beat the softened butter on high speed for about 3 minutes until creamy and pale in color. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  2. Add the confectioners sugar, cocoa powder, 3 tablespoons of heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt.
  3. Start mixing on low speed until the sugar is fully incorporated, then increase to medium-high speed and beat for 3 more minutes, scraping the bowl several times to ensure even mixing.
  4. If needed, add an additional tablespoon of heavy cream to achieve desired frosting consistency.
