Description

Deliciously sweet and spiced apple crumble bars with a buttery base, cinnamon apple filling, and a crisp oat topping. Perfect for a cozy dessert!

Ingredients

  • Base & Crumble Topping:
  • 125g (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups (300g) plain (all-purpose) flour
  • ½ cup (100g) white sugar
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 egg
  • Crumble Topping:
  • ⅓ cup (30g) rolled oats
  • Apple Filling:
  • 34 large Granny Smith apples, diced (~4 cups)
  • ¼ cup (35g) plain flour (all-purpose)
  • ¼ cup (50g) white sugar
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • For Serving:
  • Salted caramel sauce (optional)
  • Ice cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven & Prepare Pan: Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a 20cm (8”) square pan and line it with parchment paper (with overhang for easy lifting).
  2. Make the Base: In a bowl, mix together melted butter, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir until no white bits of flour remain. Add the egg and mix again. Press ⅔ of the mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan.
  3. Bake the Base: Bake for 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from oven and cool for 5 minutes.
  4. Prepare Apple Filling: While the base is baking, mix together the diced apples, flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl.
  5. Make Crumble Topping: Add oats to the reserved crumble mixture. Use a spoon or your fingers to mix until oats are mostly incorporated.
  6. Assemble the Bars: Spread the apple filling over the baked base. Crumble the remaining topping mixture evenly over the apples.
  7. Bake: Bake for 30–35 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and crisp.
  8. Cool & Serve: Allow to cool in the tin for a few minutes, then lift out using the parchment paper. Cut into bars and serve! Optional: Serve with salted caramel sauce and ice cream for an extra treat.

Notes

  • For a more decadent treat, drizzle with caramel sauce or top with whipped cream.
  • You can use other apples like Honeycrisp or Fuji for a sweeter flavor.
